AS MUCH AS JASON WANTED to be with Miranda, he understood the craving for solitude. That was one of the reasons he’d often sat on the roof outside his window in Ithaca. He found peace communing with the night. So, he remained in the living room while the other adults ignored him. Maybe that was a good thing given how much attention he’d gotten that morning about his lycanthropy.

Jessica and Caroline talked with their husbands to find out more about Miranda’s power. For his own peace of mind, Jason ignored those conversations. After a few minutes, he tried to stand again, but Riley, who was still micro-braiding his hair, tumbled into his arms with a giggle. Then Oliver and Jackson jumped toward him, so Jason dropped back down on the floor. Abby regarded the whole thing as if she wasn’t too sure about her cousins’ shenanigans, but her twin Molly ran into the fray.

“Oh, sweet Mozart!” Jason said from the bottom of a pile of children.

He crawled out from underneath them, and Jason directed his attention to loading up different presents into the different family vehicles. It let him get some fresh air and see Miranda’s aura glowing from a distance in the barn. Once he finished that self-appointed task, he entertained the children with more stories in American Sign Language until they were ready to go. Jessica and Caroline had other relatives in the area they needed to visit.

“Don’t forget,” he said to Mitch and Caroline as they were leaving, “Miranda and I can help put together all the toys the day after Christmas. We don’t mind helping.”

“We’ll see,” Mitch replied in a tone that made it seem not very likely.

Inside the house without their children around, Michael and Christina had the silent arguments of long-married couples. The glares were loud and cutting, but Jason didn’t know what they meant. He packed his things and retreated to Miranda’s girlhood bedroom.

Once he was alone, Jason admired all over again the thoughtful present Miranda had given him. It was so simple and perfect with thick paper, pencils, and different tools he might need to make his design concepts into realities.

Flexing his left hand a few times, Jason remembered one of his frequent experiences in the lab. The White Coats had broken his bones many times, especially the small ones in his hands and feet. They wanted to know about werewolf healing factors. Jason had recovered, but the potential loss of music had wounded him more than those experiments ever could.

With his brand-new Christmas present in hand, Jason had the inspiration to sketch an idea. He could take Pops’s existing violin and modify it to be played left-handed. Maybe he could help Pops have music joy in his life again. Jason smiled at the paper with his first plans as a future luthier. This would work.

When he looked up, Miranda still wasn’t back in the house. It was time to find her. If nothing else, she could send him away, but he could at least show her he cared.
